BJ Ewen has a long history with the City of Hazard. An engineer with H.A. Spaulding, INC., the long-time city engineering and architecture firm, Ewen designed and oversaw the construction of many locally prominent buildings, including: the new City Hall, the new Hazard High School, Perry County Public Library, A.B. Combs Elementary, R.W. Combs Elementary, and Willard Elementary. He became the city Building Inspector in 1996. Ewen is a 1954 graduate of Hazard High School and a graduate of the University of Kentucky. He lives in the Backwoods section of Hazard and is active in St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Ewen has three daughters, (Kathrine Harper, Mary Kidd, and Cynthia Clark), and six grandchildren.

Building Inspection

The City of Hazard's Office of Building Inspection monitors and enforces city, state, and federal building guidelines and regulations, as well as guidelines for building in and around the flood plain and floodway. Any new construction within city limits must have a building permit. The Office of Building Inspection strictly enforces the City of Hazard's Zoning District Use Regulations, Business and Residential, and all other applicable rules, regulations, and ordinances. Anyone considering the construction of a building within city limits is encouraged to consult with the Building Inspector during the initial planning stages of the project.

NOTE: Building permits are required for any construction or remodling on existing buildings when changes are planned / made to the size and / or structure of the building. ( Roof work / repair is considered non-structural.)

Large Commercial or Industrial Permit from the state office of Building Inspection

A building permit is issued by the Building Inspector when the following have been submitted and reviewed and all codes and regulations have been met:
